Magnetic Drum Separator

What is Magnetic Drum Separator

A magnetic drum separator is a type of magnetic separator used to separate tramp iron or ferromagnetic materials from bulk materials on a conveyor belt or vibrating feeder. The magnetic drum separator consists of a stationary magnetic element, placed inside a rotating stainless-steel drum. The drum rotates at a predetermined speed, causing the ferromagnetic or tramp iron materials to be magnetically attracted to the drum surface and be carried out of the magnetic field to a designated discharge point. Non-magnetic materials continue along the conveyor belt or vibrating feeder, without being affected by the magnetic field.

How Magnetic Drum Separator work?

Material to be processed enters the top of the drum separator and flows over the drum surface. As the drum housing rotates around a fixed magnetic field, all non-ferrous products that are not affected by the magnets fall freely from the drum into the cleaned material stream.

Any ferrous tramp metal is captured by the magnetic field and retained on the drum surface. As the drum rotates, the metal is carried through the diverter and released out of the magnetic field.

Magnets used in Magnetic Drum Separator

Ceramic magnets are usually made of composite materials of iron oxide and barium carbonate or strontium carbonate, generally ferrite magnets. Magnetic separators with ceramic magnets are suitable for applications where free iron particles and larger iron particles are separated. The average magnetic field strength on the drum surface is 1500-2000 Gauss.Their low cost and moderate magnetic field strength make them ideal for less demanding applications.

Rare earth magnets are made of alloys of rare earth elements such as neodymium, iron, and boron, and are generally NdFeB magnets. The magnetic separator using high-strength rare earth Nd-Fe-B (Nd-Fe-B) magnets can effectively remove low-magnetism magnetic pollutants and separate fine iron particles. The average magnetic field strength on the drum surface is 3500 – 5500 Gauss. They provide higher field strengths than ceramic magnets, making them suitable for more demanding applications such as separating small iron particles.

Applications of Magnetic Drum Separator
